Combined Photovoltaic and Thermal Solar Panels - Enhanced Energy Conversion and Heat Transfer

Rezumat: Celulele, modulele si panourile fotovoltaice sunt caracterizate de un set de conditii de raportare standardizate ce sunt definite de parametri precum temperatura sau iradierea spectrala sau totala. In conditiile in care puterea totala obtinuta este influentata in mare masura de temperatura de functionare, o metoda de crestere a procentului de conversie a energiei este mentinerea panoului solar la o temperatura cat mai apropiata de conditiile standard de testare. Aceasta lucrare analizeaza optiunile disponibile in aceasta directie si propune intensificarea transferului de caldura de la panoul fotovoltaic la un fluid de racire. Astfel, panoul devine hibrid, ce realizeaza conversia energiei solare in energie electrica, dar si termica. Conversia totala de energie prezinta un potential de crestere de la circa 12 – 15% (numai energie electrica) la 86% (energie electrica si termica).

Abstract: Photovoltaic cells, modules and panels are characterized by a set of standard reporting conditions defined by parameters such as temperature or spectral or total irradiance. In the conditions that the total power output is influenced largely by operating temperature, one method to improve the overall energy conversion is to maintain the panel temperature as close as possible to standard testing conditions. This paper analyzes the options available in this direction and proposes enhancement of heat transfer from the photovoltaic panel to a cooling fluid. Thus, the panel becomes a hybrid one that converts solar energy into electrical energy, as well as thermal energy. The overall energy conversion increases from about 12 – 15% (electrical only) to a potential 86% (electrical and thermal)
